Venus



Roger Michell

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1957. A film director and screenwriter. Having graduated from Cambridge University, he worked as an assistant in the Royal Court Theatre for 2 years. In 1985 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he directed for the next 6 years. Roger Michell soon earned a good reputation as a stage, television and film director. He has won BAFTA award for Persuasion, a Jane Austen adaptation. Moreover, he directed and co-wrote the TV series The Buddha of Suburbia and the screen adaptation of his own award-winning stage production of My Night with Reg. Michell's credits include also the feature film Titanic Town set in Belfast, starring Julie Walters. He is more widely known, however, for the romantic comedy Notting Hill with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Last year, Peter O'Toole was nominated for Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in Michell's Venus. The director is married to Kate Buffery and has two children.
