Born in New York in 1963. Having graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City he worked as a still photographer. After that he took up film directing. At first he directed commercials, which won numerous awards at advertising industry festivals and other shows, including a screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He made his feature debut with L.I.E. (2001), premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was widely acclaimed and received a number of prizes and six nominations for Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature and Best Director. Other prizes went to film producers and to Paul F. Dano, who was awarded for Best Debut Performance. Twelve and Holding (2005) is the second film directed by Michael Custa. At present, he is adapting the bestselling Brady Udall's book The Miracle od Edgar Mint (2006) for producers Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe.
