The Art of Crying



South Jutland, early 1970s. Life is not easy for 11-year-old Allan. His father has ‘attacks of nerves’ and repeatedly tries to commit suicide. Allan’s mother has given up; she is doped all day long as she regularly uses tranquillisers. His older brother has moved out and the family’s small dairy store is not doing well. When his older sister stops spending the night on the couch with her father, it is up to Allan ‘to keep the family together’. His father, Henry, finds solace in delivering funeral speeches and mourning for the dead. Soon, Allan lends a hand to make sure there are enough funerals to keep his father happy...
